Controversy as White Curator is Appointed for African Collection at Brooklyn Museum
Category : African arts
A few Africans and African Americans have expressed their total condemnation of the appointment of Kristen Windmuller-Luna as curator of the Brooklyn Museum African collection.
Though the museum argued that Windmuller-Luna is a curator and historian of African arts and architecture with her object curating that ‘counters myths about African civilizations and artistic productions by focusing on cultural specificity, artistic diversity and global historical context’. The questions a few people are worried about are;
- Are there no Africans or African Americans who can perform this role well, bearing in mind that it is about African collections?
- Is this not an extension of white supremacy?
- Will she convey or discharge her duties in true reflection of what it should be?
Can these questions really be answered? What are your thoughts about this?
